You’re an Adult… Now What?

If you’re like me and get yourself stuck in a lot of tricky situations your first resort is to look for an adult, but at this point in life I’ve come to realize that I am an adult. With this realizations comes the fact that the world does not revolve around me and I have to take responsibility for all of my actions and their respective repercussions. Sad, I know! With that being said I also have all the freedom in the world to finally engage in my interests and pursue what I’ve always wanted to do, so I guess being 20 isn’t as scary as it seems to be. It’s time for us wavy girls to leave our comfort zones and discover what the world has in store for us and what baggage should be permanently left behind.

You always used to say “When I grow up, I want to do so and so and be so and so.” Well, guess what? You’re a grown up now; have you met all those lofty dreams you proposed as an idealist 7-year-old who also believed Lindsay Lohan had a real twin in The Parent Trap? I’m not saying all those dreams were idle desires derived from having a wild imagination; there certainly had to be some realistic and fully manageable goals that are not too late to reach, and it is also never too late to create new ones. Do not, however, confuse these goals with temporary tasks. The goals I’m talking about are those that you continuously contribute to and that will lead you to the life you’ve always wanted to achieve, and that not only look good on a resume or when introducing yourself to a colleague or at a party but that also factor into your happiness and well-being.

Take out a blank notebook and on that first page write down all of your goals in ink; I emphasize you use ink because you cannot make a mistake in what you genuinely want for yourself. They can be short-term or long-term but make sure you write down everything that comes to mind from the simplest character traits you want to develop to your most untamed career aspirations, and don’t be embarrassed about anything that goes on your list. This list is for your eyes only, or for any friend you’d wish to hold you accountable to accomplishing your goals. As time goes on you may cross out some goals, shorten or elaborate on others, and add notes. You’re not just going to use the first page, though. As time goes on add advice for yourself, mistakes you’ve made that you should learn from, the steps you took when you were successful that one occasion, or even new goals for yourself. This could be considered a journal, but if you’re like me and can’t keep a journal to save your life just look at your notebook as your personalize guide for success. Little by little, note by note, this book will accompany you throughout your career.

To give you an idea, my first goal is kindness. Prioritizing kindness is one of the simplest changes you can make in your life and can be done by simply complimenting a stranger at the grocery store or smiling at the mailman. Learning how to manage your time wisely is also an imperative skill set that will go a long way, and yes that means putting your phone away for hours at a time and prioritizing organization and planning. While you’re planning your week you probably might also want to add in time for that hobby you’ve always wanted to try but were always “too busy” for (news flash: you’re not.) There’s really nothing stopping you. Remember, you’re an adult now and you can do whatever you want with your time!

Maybe you wrote down that you want to be financially stable or experience financial growth. This can include applying to more scholarships, learning how to invest the money you already have, or learning to save for a rainy day. If you’re a college student this can seem tricky as trying to save or invest money is tough when you have nothing left over after purchasing books, paying rent, and buying food. Buy a little piggy bank and add every coin you get in change or you find on the street. When I did this last year I cashed in $40 worth of coins; this may not seem like a lot, but it adds up. If you are able to do so open a savings account with Barclay’s or Synchrony; in an emergency you want to feel secure and know that you have a source of funds to pull from rather than having to dig yourself deeper in debt. Money doesn’t buy happiness but realistically you need money to be able to prosper and invest your energy towards going forward and not on just getting by; your future self will thank you.

I could spend hours listing possible goals and aspirations, but that would take time away from fulfilling your plan for going to the gym more often/ going grocery shopping for a healthier diet/ etc. Your list can be pages and pages long but the key that I’m trying to highlight is the importance of action. Act on your dreams or that’s merely what they’ll always be, just dreams. Do not be afraid of failing. I know it’s easier said than done, but look at me: I have always wanted to start a blog and here I am years later working towards this ambition of mine, and I know very well that this could be a flop and it would be embarrassing but I gave up on allowing that fear to immobilize me. It’s time to be the person you’ve always imagined yourself of being!
