Study Abroad Scholarships and Opportunities

I’ve come to believe that studying abroad is an absolute necessity in college and will completely transform your perspective in how you view your education as well as your community, however I can’t omit the fact that it is a luxury. While it’s not easy to afford taking classes or pursuing an internship abroad that should not stop you when there’s hundreds of organizations and websites who want to fund students like us to gain an international edge. These opportunities are not ones you should put the side! Programs are for undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent graduates.

ACBIH Study Abroad Scholarship for Minority Students

Scholarships funded by the Advisory Council for Bosnia and Herzegovina for students of African American, Hispanic American, and Native American Descent to study abroad in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Programs are for a semester or for a whole year, and scholarship awards range from $500 to $2,000.

AIFS Study Abroad Scholarships and Grants

Scholarships available for specific AIFS programs ranging from $200 to $5,000. More than 30 programs available for study abroad in Europe, Africa, Latin America, etc. Visit website for details on specific programs and scholarships.

Allianz Global Assistance ScholarTrips Scholarship

Awards six $2,500 scholarships for study or volunteer abroad programs and 30 $50 Amazon gift cards for runner-ups. Must create a video or write an essay answering the question “What inspires you to travel abroad?” Available for any student over the age of 14.

API Study Abroad and Intern Abroad Scholarships

Available for fall, spring, summer, and winter terms. Scholarships range from $250 to $1,000 and offer opportunities for all types of students from first generation, STEM, athletes, etc.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Grants undergraduate students with limited financial means over 2,800 scholarships ranging up to $5,000 to study or intern abroad. Available for summer, fall, and spring. Note: you must be a U.S. citizen to be eligible.

The Bright!Tax Global Scholar Initiative

Funding based on merit and financial need to support students who are studying/living abroad. Scholarships start at $1,00o for full semester programs. Note: you must be a U.S. citizen to be eligible.

CEA Scholarships

Offers several study abroad programs and internships in Europe, South Africa, and Latin America. Scholarships range from merit-based, need-based, diversity scholarships, scholarships with distinction, and affiliate scholarships. Available for summer, fall, and spring, and range from $400-$3,000.

CIEE Scholarships

CIEE offers a variety of study abroad programs all over the world for all areas of study. With these programs CIEE offers scholarships and grants, and if you are Pell eligible they will even cover your airfare. They also offer international internship opportunities.

DIS Scholarship/Diversity Scholarship

If you want to study abroad in Europe, DIS is a non-profit study abroad foundation with two locations, one in Denmark and the other in Stockholm. Apply for a scholarship to study abroad in one of their two locations, with funds ranging from $500-$10,000 depending on the duration of the program you choose. Diversity Abroad

Find the perfect international program for you, whether that’s studying abroad, an internship, volunteering program, fellowship, teaching opportunity, or job. Diversity abroad will connect you with endless opportunities and the resources to be able to afford these. There are opportunities from all over the world and resources on what to do before, during, and after your study abroad experience.

The Explorer’s Club Grant

Grants available for high school and undergraduate students as well as graduate and post-doc students with an average award of $1,500 and $2,500, respectively. For students interested in pursuing scientific research in topics ranging from climate change, marine science, plants/animals, etc. Must write a proposal for a research project.

Fullbright Travel Grants

A variety of different fellowships and programs for recent graduates with bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Programs available in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America and range from education to politics. Check the link for the full list of opportunities.

FundMyTravel.com

Crowdfunding site for anybody who wants to study, intern, volunteer, or just travel abroad. It’s free to create an account and there is only a 5% on donations.

Funds for Education Abroad

Started in 2010 to help fund underrepresented students in study abroad such as low-income, first generation, community college, students with disabilities, athletes, veterans, and other minority students. Awards up to $10,000 for the academic year, $5,000 for fall/spring semester, and at least $1,250 for summer. Study abroad program must last at least 4 weeks. Note: must be U.S. citizen or resident.

GoAbroad Programs

GoAbroad.com is a database with hundreds of different opportunities for going abroad including studying abroad, volunteering abroad, interning abroad, teaching abroad, and TEFL. Also offers a scholarship search engine and articles on picking a program, traveling, and living abroad.

GoEnounce

GoEnnounce not only offers scholarships but also allows you to crowdfund by creating a “mission” for any academic or organizational goals you wish to fund. There is no fee to create a mission and only has a small fee of 3.5% per donation.

Go Overseas Study Abroad Scholarship

One scholarship of $500 will be awarded to an undergraduate student enrolling in a study abroad or inter abroad program. No particular major or study abroad location is required.

IES Abroad Scholarships

IESAbroad.org offers a database of different study abroad and intern abroad programs all over the world. Once you’ve applied to a program you are eligible for scholarships, including need-based aid, diversity scholarships, disability grants, etc.

Luce Scholars Program

Program for college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals of all fields to study abroad in Asia. Provides stipends, language courses, and professional placement in Asia for 15-18 Luce Scholars. Note: must be U.S. citizen under 30 years of age.

Tripping.com Travel Lovers’ Scholarship

Two scholarship awards of $1,000 for study abroad in the fall for college and grduate students. Must write a 1,000-2,000 word travel guide essay on a travel destination of your choice
